Welcome to the celebration! WRFL-FM (Radio Free Lexington), the University of Kentucky's student-run community radio station, is marking its 20th anniversary of commercial-free programming with FreeKY Fest, a free festival of music, art and exhibitions of eclectic culture.
To kick it all off, we'll start with a week of festivities dubbed "Alternative Music Week" from April 19 - April 27th and blow it out with a 12-hour FreeKY Festival in downtown Lexington on the roof of the Downtown Lexington Transit Center (on the corner of High St. & Martin Luther King Blvd).
You're invited to participate in this fabulous week of events which will include a Blues, Bluegrass and Jazz Benefit Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 at The Kentucky Theatre to benefit WRFL's "Build the Tower, Boost the Power" campaign to raise $150,000 for construction of a new tower moving the station from 250 to 7900 watts. The bands who are scheduled to appear at the concert are: Some Other Meanness (country blues), Old Vine Street Social and Pleasure Club (New Orleans funk), The Blue Dawg, Soul Patch (original blues) and the UK Graduate Jazz Combo.
An art show of photographic works by the many artists who have been WRFL-FM staffers, alumni, and supporters is planned for the Cat's Den in the University of Kentucky Student Center, with an opening reception on Friday, April 25 with a performance by the band The Yellow belts.
The FreeKY Fest will run on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. -
11 p.m. in downtown Lexington atop the Lexington Transit Center. With a "Crazy Concourse" of activity, interactive art installations, oversized inflatable midway attractions. Lurking inside the transit center, a mind-blowing underworld pulsating with live action art demonstrations and even more music. The FreeKY Fest will launch at 11 am with a children's concert.
Also planned for the day on the concourse stage are performances by WRFL's Music from India host, Veena's Dewali and her Punjab and Dewali Indian Dancers, a nighttime performance by Foxfire long time host of the Old School Hip Hop Show and Fayette county teacher, Tommy Miller, will be joined by his Breakdancin' seventh graders.
Local Kentucky food vendors will be supplying an eclectic variety of foods: Mr Gyros, Sharkey's, Jake's Lemonade, Punjab II, Mr. Savs, R&K Barbecue, and Gumbo Ya-Ya's.
